We believe that holidays should be exceptional experiences (exceptionally good that is, not exceptionally bad!) and in reality, disabled access is much easier said than done.
We feel that there is no reason why those who are supporting others, including those who are disabled, should not be able to enjoy real 5 star facilities. This has been our aim at The Thomas Centre.
All our properties are audited each year by Visit Britain and our bungalows are rated as 5 Star for their quality standard and M2 for disabled accessibility (details below). Last year, Visit Britain introduced a new standard, The Gold Award.
Some of the features that have helped us get the M2 disabled access standard and our Gold Awards include
- All doors are wider than standard, and all door treads are flat.
- Large entrance halls, with plenty of room for suitcases and wheelchairs on arrival.
- Large bedrooms, some with spacious single beds … even some 4’ single beds!
- The bathrooms are large. They are complete wet rooms with no panels, allowing easy access to the shower, a large bath and toilet, all fitted with appropriate handrails and shower seat.
- The bathrooms have been especially fully fitted with Mermaid panelling and sealed floors. This means there is no tiling and therefore no grout in any of the bathrooms (important for those who have pica concerns)
- Wherever possible all lighting is dimmer switch controlled (important for those with light sensitivity).
- All flooring is high specification laminate. Any rugs can be removed upon request (perfect for wheelchair users).
- All heating is under floor and thermostatically controlled. (very important to those who are sensory impaired as this avoids the risk of burning from radiators)
- All properties were built with at least double the recommended acoustic panels (important for those concerned with noise control).
- Open plan wardrobes, no doors for easy access.
- All light switches and power sockets are at a suitable height.
- In some cases we have installed electric blinds with remote controls where blinds are not easily accessible for opening and closing.
- All access ways have been built allowing a wheel chair to move easily
- Level patio allowing all to enjoy the outdoor spaces and the wonderful views.
